Brief History of IIL
Indian Immunologicals was established by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1982 as its unit,
with the objective of making vaccines available to farmers at an affordable price.
The unit was corporatized as Indian Immunologicals Limited in 1999.
IIL started manufacturing human vaccines in 1998 at the request of the Government of India.
It was the second company in the world and the first in India to launch purified vero cell rabies vaccine (PVRV) under the brand Abhayrab,
which led to the discontinuation of older, unsafe sheep brain–derived vaccines (Nerve Tissue Vaccines – NTV) in the country.
